A must see ” You tube” this problem is everywhere
Jul 9th, 2009 | By Debbie Vitez | Section: About Trichloroethylene, better known as TCE., CommunityNeighbors in the vicinity of the Behr Dayton Thermal Products plant want the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to commit to regular testing of indoor household air as planning continues for the clean-up of a contaminated groundwater plume.
Stacey Coburn, the U.S. EPA’s project manager for the site, said the agency hasn’t ruled out retesting. She said she doesn’t believe that anyone’s health is at risk from the plume.

This TCE Blog..is an amazing site… you should spend a few minutes browsing thru it… It was created by someone, who like us, was exposed, lost friends and family members and had no where to turn for answers… So he educates us on what is going on thru out all of North America including Canada.. A Huge Thank You to Neil Fischbein for all you do..
Have your say! Submit your story!

On a personal note.
The one gentleman speaks of levels of 900 ppb.. We vacacted our home when we learned we were sitting on ( and had been breathing in… levels 107,000 ppb)… I was unable to walk, sit or lay down for months without major pain and discomfort…and had no idea what was going on..
I was medicated for 2 years unable to breath properly… Today I know why..
The contamination in Preston is of Historic Proportion…. and city hall raises the property taxes and pretends the problem is all better now… Innocent families are moving in, and None the wiser, as to how deadly that area still is.. All in the name of what ?.. protecting whom? the current home owner ?
It’s disturbing when a government would bring forward legislation to protect the health of a child from second hand smoke in a vehicle, and then would refuse to acknowledge the effects of deadly chemical vapours seeping into that same child’s bedroom as he lies sleeping. This decision they leave to our court system to sort out.
….power of the corporation?
The problem is that nobody believes it’s their problem from the City. to the Region….right down the line. Everyone is just hoping we all go away, stop whinning and let sleeping dogs lie. As Debbie says unexpecting families are moving in not having a clue of the effects, this is one of the reasons I have not sold my home besides the damage has already been done. I am watching these cases with interest for the first Judge to stand up to the Goverments,Military and the big money makers and look out for the ordinary Joe….when this happens communities that have been effected may have a fighting chance in the system
The original owners of these homes had no idea that this problem would occur. The fact that this problem has been found and the fact that “no level of government is offering to help” should be of concern to all.
The least that could be offered is a municipal tax break as clearly these property values have decreased due to this chemical exposure!!!!!!!
A number of homes in this area have been sold since the disclosure was made…..taxes have increased making the area look like everything is okay. Just try to get a decrease in your assessment…we tried with no success since homes in the area ( which area ) are selling for fair market value or above. Our hands have been tied and the powers that be are proud of this fact…concern for us that’s a joke. No one in the City or Region has stepped up to the plate to help….and never will.
How can taxes be increased on homes that are being contaminated by TCE fumes????
Home assessments are supposed to be done by consideration of all of the pertinent facts. The fact that these homes are being contaminated by TCE fumes is a MAJOR PERTINENT FACT!!!!!
My argument exactly Bev..
They claim they have nothing to do with MPAC …so they hide behind each other. It’s a joke..
They get away with it… and we do what???
The same council that approves building permits without environment studies.. again and we do what?
This environmental problem that is affecting the inside air quality of this group of homes has probably never had a precident set for this in the MPAC evaluation process.
As more environmental cases like this are likely to occur in the future due to stricter environmental legislature, possibly the ombudsman would look into this. Has anyone contacted the ombudsman about this?
I have contacted Ombudsman and they are looking into it for me.( but). They have certain restrictions…
Bev I have contacted everyone including the Prime Minister about this.. NOTHING..( they claim it’s not a federal issue) because it’s not in the Grand River, when it clearly is..
NOTE.. Goodyear showed up for our Hospital Rally when it too was clearly not a federal issue… but TV and Print News were there… .and of course.. So was Goodyear..I do not have one ounce of respect for that man.
I even contacted Erin Brockovitch and she was more help then any elected official in Canada.. Sad really.. People sick and dying and they just turn their backs… This will be exposed, I need my second wind.. I have been fighting this fight uphill for 3 years now..
Once I get it back… I am going to be more organized and have more support.. thanks to the Advocate and the exposure I am getting on this little site. This will get the exposure it deserves, those people will be vindicated… and We will hold elected officials accountable..
The free ride for these people is quickly coming to an end..
Environmental cases like this are all over Cambridge..all you have to see is look, Alan Bradley have been pumping TCE for 17 years, Long Manufacturing and who else is along Franklin Blvd.
The old Apple plant in Preston… the old Iron ( Mallble Iron?.. on Shade Street… Firth Brown,( they’ve approved a Drug Store on that site with no environmental study??? )
Joy Manufacturing.. American Standard in Hespeler..( they’re putting condos in the American building )..and that’s off the top of my head… No one is looking is my argument..
They built in Hespeler just below Bundy Tubing with no environment study.. How did the get away with that?
They know Dam well it has to be contaminated.. All involved in approving this crap will be held accountable..It is /was their job to order an environmental study( it’s the law)
So you’re on Council and you’re above the law.. (?) Correct me if I am wrong but it’s my belief that it is the law to do the study. That’s how north star got caught… they did a study found the contamination and
ARE CLEANING IT UP, WHICH I DO COMMEND.. it’s the dirty dealings I take issue with..
This is so maddening…What about disclosure? Are those homeowners in the contamination zone liable if they do not disclose, to the buyers, the fact that the house actually sits on a contaminated plume? If new homeowners decide to go after the former because of failure to disclose, would the city and MPAC take the fall…probably not. If these homes are being sold through the blind-eye approach, then MPAC (and city) will use the same tactics… that being …see, hear and speak no evil…voila…no evil!
Those individuals who are afraid to sell their homes because they are on contaminated grounds and because they would feel responsible for the unsuspecting new owners, have had their rights to enjoy their property taken away due to a blindness in the system. The Ombusman’s Office needs to be made aware of this blindness.
I agree with what Bev is saying …MPAC needs a reality check.
They do disclose, or they used too. .. As a Realtor I see listings daily that do not even mention the contamination..( Lets just pretent it doesn’t exist. ). It’s a sad state of affairs
