  1. Thats the way it should be Debbie, I commend you and the Advocate.

    Rick Cowsill

  2. I agree, nice one , Deb.

  3. Looks like Tommy Vann cann’t be used anymore!

  4. Thanx guys, and Tommy Vann I know your orginal. I know where you live..heehee

  5. Tommy, I may have to stop using Margaret Barr’s name too. The way I sometimes go on-and-on here, the poor woman will probably be quite relieved. I hear that, in person, Barr is a quiet, laid-back, reserved and introverted individual; and would never step forward and speak her mind. I’m surprised she hasn’t already tried to sue me and/or the Advocate. :-)

  6. I will respond to Margarets comment, as soon as I get off the floor.. LMAO

  7. Let me play devils advocate, so to speak, on this issue. While I agree with using your real name, the fact is you created an interesting dilemma for yourself. Can Waycat still post? I am sure that is not a real name, can arley6 still have a say using that, Aidan bamba Angel can not post then as i know it is not his real name, not everyone knows who Sarge is. The point i am getting at is this, if you implement a policy it must be across the board, not just for those that you or a few people know, or you become like the paper that you do not want to become. Now with that being said, go ahead and slag me if you will, I can take it!

  8. I agree James.. it has to apply to everyone.. even tho we know who the others you mention are. I am sure they will have no problem coming in under their own names.. Rules are rules..

  9. I may be off on the Sarge one though, he may be able to claim artistic license.

  10. Usually, people with no ‘hidden agenda’ have nothing to hide. Having said that, though…Deb, there is sometimes good reason for folks to use an ‘alias’. And, sad to say, but sometimes people are actually ‘afraid’ to comment on controversial issues, for fear of reprisal. They need to be heard too. Just because they may not be as ‘out-front’ as you or I, is no reason to shut them down completely.

The idiot who came on here, under an ‘asssumed’ name, and started insulting the posters (and defending certain politicians) was so transparent as to be ridiculous (funny, actually). I think most, if not all, of us are smart enough to see through the occasional ‘buttinski’ who has done nothing except publicly damage the very person or persons they seek to ‘help’.

If Waycat and a few of the others that James mentioned are gone I will be so :-(

  11. I have had people criticize my writings, and it doesn’t bother me if they use their real name or not. And if you want a debate, sometimes you have to let the loonies have their say! After all you let me on here!

  12. l must confess. l have always wanted to meet Marg Barr and maybe someday l will. l used to get halfway through some of her comments in the paper and have to fold it up or toss it. l didn’t want my wife gettin’ any smart ideas on how to deal with people. What cha reading sugar? Huh—- oh nothing—- l guess the price of gas is going up, just the usual. That’s probably a different lady you must be talking about comment #5. She’s the kidda person l’d want covering my back in a tight spot on Parliment hill. l wonder if she can control her temper?l think l’ll check it out one day! Maybe.

  13. James Hillis, you are a welcome sight on this site.. ( no pun intended.. ok that’s a lie, I meant it.)

Actually Waycat and Aidian are Writers, they don’t come on here bashing anyone..

And as for Sarge.. Well he’s Sarge.. That’s not going to change..

But where do I draw the line.. ?? Do I have to start censoring comments.. Gawd, I have to earn a living ..how would I find the time to control every comment?

But maybe that is just what I will do..

If I suspect the person is just being nasty for the sake of being nasty and bashing unnecessarily I will SIMPLY delete the comment..

    FEED BACK PLEASE..

  14. Well aren’t we the sensitive group worrying about someone coming on this site so free and full of themselves. l vote for freedom . Let ‘em have their say. lt’s only words out of someones thoughts. lf they get filthy rude———toss ‘em. lt’s your call hon but l’m different to and who knows maybe this person has a split personality and will come free some day. l love ya all.

  15. Thomas, we will never meet (again) if you continue to address me as “Marg”. My friends know better. I hate that particular shortening of my name. It always reminds me of my Grandpa’s cows when they would
‘belch’. Think about it; say it very deeply and like this: Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrg. See it sounds just like a cow belching.

You can call me Margaret. You can call me Maggie. You can call me Peggy. You can call me Marty. But ya’ doesn’t have to call me Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrg :-)

  16. Debbie. I agree with you about Sarge and Waycat and Aidan Bamba Angel. They are cartoonists and writers. I have never seen anything other than that from them -never anything derogatory. that is my two cent worth-just sayin ‘

  17. Damn my Liberalism, i just believe that everybody has the right to say what they want even if we don’t like it, as long as there are no threats of violence against another. And I don’t consider myself a writer by length of the imagination.

  18. I am liberal to James but i put very little credence when some post as obvious pseudo names. Would be like saying my name was Ivana Humpalot and was posting about a new entertainment facility in town.

  19. Not damn your Liberalism. Good for Liberalism, because it treasures free speech.

As I wrote earlier, I think most of us can see the difference between someone who has something legitimate to say, and someone else who isn’t worthy of note. I feel certain that most posters here, saw right through the last couple of ‘blasters’. I remember thinking, at the time of reading, that the ‘nasty posters’ could use my professional advice (Communications). Their submissions were lame, especially, if they were trying to promote a particular candidate (which they were).

So for the second time today, Deb,come on….let ‘em write. Who am I gonna’ take to task if we don’t have some crazies on here?

  20. Ivana Humpalot? Is that your pole dancing name Joe?. I agree with Margaret though, most of us see through blatant stupidity no matter what name they use. Hell, I could open a new e-mail account, give myself another name and post the same thing. The best way to deal with people like that? Don’t reply to them, they soon lose patience and vanish!

  21. Ha ha James . I dont use an alias when I dance . On second thought and more deliberation . Let them post ,

  22. Anybody need coffee tomorrow? Sounds like we have some things to yap about!

  23. Deb…I think we should just rely on your good judgment. If they are commenting just to insult, they should get the boot. If they are actually trying to communitcate something…let them stay.

  24. Mags Boilard, (my voice of reason)..ok.. I think this is what I shall do. Thank you..

  25. James .. yes to coffee.. any other takers..?
The poor Coffee peddlar will lock the doors after tomorrow ..lol.

  26. lt’s your site girl. lf you find it irrattatting just toss it. You got enough tatters on your plate now. l find them funny. They make me look smarrt. Who goes in or comes out coach? l’ll support you either way. See nice people like Margaret (OK), James, Tracy, Bev, Joe, Adian, Waycat, even you and whoever respect each others choices and are not milliskshus. Say it do it!

  27. You nobs all have fingers and type too fast. What time? Will it be daylight savings or what? You Deb, my treat whatever. l’ll bring my raccoon pictures.

  28. 11am is good for me

  29. Haha . You really need to do something about that name Meso . Switch hands or something .

  30. Joe that was great..
I deleted him earlier but now.. lol.. Meso I am gonna kick your ass if it turns out we know you..

  31. So is 11 okay?

  32. Totally off topic.. I just read my sitemeter. and we are at 8,495 hits ??
    and 29,517 page views.. woohoo..
I really have to learn how to run this site… does anyone know anyone who is familiar with Word Press?..
I need to instal one of those poll thingamajigs.. Don’t get excited Joe, I didn’t mean POLE..as in dancing

  33. James .. what time?.. “Meso”.. suggests 11. that works for me..

  34. Wish I could make it, but I will be getting ready for a very important luncheon…previously planned and cancelled once already…so I dare not cancel again,

  35. For strange reason i will be Galt tomorrow morning around 11, sounds good to me!

  36. I will talk to you tomorrow, my site is on wordpress and it is easy!

  37. Well Well Well
I see I have been missing more and more due to my anti social behaviours !!
Not only a good debate but also plans of a coffee date …
THANK GOD I have Deb …. Or I would be LOST (ok more lost… ok ok just missing LoL)

On the name thing … I think the freedom to speak of opinions & to comment back and forth is an
integral part of this site. I feel that so long as visitors, members, peekers, lurkers, and the such
ensure that they maintain the moral ethics & social behaviour demonstrated on this site, I can not
see an issue. Than again I have not viewed the ‘nonsense’ that has transpired earlier.
With the amazing caliber of people who visit this site continue their usual respectable characteristics
than those whom seek this site out to obviously ruffle feathers will not get the ‘pleasure’ of such response.
Kill them with kindness…. knowledge.. and maybe a hefty dose of acceptance (to a degree)

Allowing others to antagonize you brings you down to ‘their’ pitiful level …. and from what I have so pleasantly seen that is a HUGE drop in levels ;)

Enjoy the site Deb has created for what it is for, enjoy debates, share some opinions and comment with respect and just be yourselves !!!!! We all create this site for what it is, a wonderful place to come!!!

Yepyep ramble ramble I do, making up for lost time and comments.

Seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee all those joining for a caffeine binge tomorrow <<<>>>>
    C.

  42. I think you should not worry about what mixture we create & JUST COME FOR JAVA not to mention
spending time with me should over rule ANY plans or feelings LoL

    See you there !!!!!

  45. Well blow me down.

I was never afraid to state my name on any item or opinion that I have posted in the past.
I have always been the type of guy who likes to poke the fire and get some sparks.
I have lived in all the Waterloo County cities and worked as a chef like my father Connie Serbu in several well known establishments in and around the Cambridge area.
My love for Hespeler as my birth city is the same as anyone whom was raised their in the early fifties.
The information and connection I have gotten from being part of the Advocate has been mostly soothing and sometimes prickly when a subjects nerve end has been touched.
Because I now live 5000 km from Cambridge i get my home town fix from this site and have enjoyed many of the articles from fellow contributors, enough to make a comment on some of them in my style and character.
My family friends and past workmates still live in the area and I have been back home on numerous occasions in the past 15 years since my wife Cathy and i have moved here from Preston and Galt.
WayCat is my handle for Wayne and Cathy.
My wife and her parents lived on Pine Crescent in Preston beside contaminated neighbouring houses.
Yes we probably might have purchased the house from her parents and still be living there if it was not for the TCE scare and the contaminated water situation.
I hold my opinions on most political, religious and community issues because of my distance and not having a full grasp understanding the issues.
I have enjoyed the humour, history and the information that is published on this site.
I have respect for those of you who keep us entertained with their knowledge and stories.
I am now semi retired and over the last few years have been putting my energy into writing a cook book that will contain items, known history and recipes from the local hotels and restaurants that I and my father worked at.
I have part of the completed book at the publishers and am now working on making sure that the recipes have all been taste tested and corrected.
The book will contain my father’s recipes from the old Iroquois Hotel, The Breslau, Preston Springs and the Kress House.
For those of you who first tried his stuffed rolled ribs, pig tails and Prime Rib might enjoy and bring back memories gone by..
I will feature all the original Knotty Pine recipes for the those infamous pot pies and almond cake, raspberry pies, buttermilk scones and butter tarts that I learned to prepare while being a chef there.
The book will contain lots of interesting stories about the restaurants owners and workers along with the many recipes that made it note worthy.
In all the posts that I have contributed to the Advocate, I never indented to harm or disparage any contributor. I only wanted to cast my view and throw some good humour or information into the ring.
I want to thank Debbie and the Advocate for this forum and for letting me continue to voice my stories and opinions under my original moniker!
    Thanks. WCS

  46. Hey Wayne… How are you? Of course you can continue using your original moniker, I think you were here before me..
And if we can allow Meso Hornay to post.. you certainly can.. Keep em coming

  47. I am humbled by your kindness!

  48. Being in New Zealand these last 14 years I thoroughly enjoy getting my daily dose of chuckles and gossip from back home. Keep up the good work boys and girls :)

  49. The Wayne Frosch from Hespeler?

  50. you mean there is more then 1 of me James??…lol

  51. Could be, nice to hear from you! Keep coming back, you might be surprised.

  52. How is tomorrow morning, at Deb’s time and place of preference? I couldn’t attend today and feel sooooo unloved ( and left-out)! :-(

  53. Hi Debbie,
Thank-you for re-considering your decision….just so everyone knows I use this alias because of my job…if this decision was made to have your name posted ,,,, I would have no longer been able to post any of my comments…would still read the site but would have no say on any postings…Debbie is a friend that we have meet through the TCE nightmare…she knows who I am and knows that I honestly post………since TCE has effected our lives my job security is one of the most important that must be preserved…..I hope by not posting under my real name that I have not insulted anyone…

  54. Okay…I give up. No response from Deb or anyone else on here. None of you want to have me coffee with me tomorrow. I am going to bed with a good book :-(

  55. Wayne….Just saw your post! You have the Knotty Pine Almond Cake recipe?????? Oh please..oh please send it to me. When I used to have birthdays (I no longer do..not that I’m dead yet…just gave up birthdays) ALL I ever asked for was a Knotty Pine Almond cake…nothing as good anywhere, anytime.

    margaret-barr@sympatico.ca

  56. Margaret:: We are going to plan a meeting in advance for the next time and will post it here, hope you can make it then. As for your Knotty Pine recipe, i may be able to get that for you as i know the son of one of the original bakers at the pine! See what i can do!

  57. Margaret…. yes coffee tomorrow would be great.. and James.. I too want that recipe..

  58. Arley.. you’re welcome..

  59. My name is Victor l’m all alone and l’m going to go now. l’m going to go now to see a show Alice in Wounderland. l need some rest l’m going to flash back to the 60’s now. l’m lonely and tired. l hope the movie makes me happppy. Bye……..everyone ! Your Pal

  60. Margaret,

Yes it is me. You can get the recipe from the internet and you can purchase butttered almond cakes and cupcakes by calling 622-7604 or email JGourmetBaking@aol.com .
My son in law and daughter requested the cake for their wedding since both of them grew up with buttered almond as their favoured birthday cakes.

I am going to weigh in on the anonymous names topic (thankyou Waycat for saying who you are); obviously nothing to hide. My concerns are that this is an election year and some legitimate candidates could have comments made about them that are not legitimate. Allegiances will come hot and heavy. If you allow nicknames or assumed names you open it up to that sort of action. Nicknames are not bad as long as Debbie knows who they really are and that a game is not being played. Assumed names are just that and are meant to be a curtain or else they would use their real names. Writers who historically use assumed names have done so for privacy, but when you are doing it for blogging purposes that is no longer for privacy, but because you have something to hide. Freedom of speech doesn’t come in to this debate because no one is forcing anyone to stop writing, but to write using their own name.

  61. Nice to see you here, Jan. Wayne actually sent me the Almond Cake recipe, but now that I know I can order cupcakes……I will be picking up a phone instead of a spoon. Thank you!

You are so right about the agendas of those who won’t reveal their true identity. I’ve never had much, if any time, for anonymous writers (unless they’re novelists).

I’ll perpetuate (or perhaps confirm) a ‘rumour” here, Jan. Are you running for office? I hope so. We could use you on council.

  62. I am sure that you have heard this before but no comment. (yet)
Thank you though for your moral support.
What I will tell you is, if you go to “fallensparrows.ca” and look under “beginnings”, you can get a sneak peak before local media gets their press release. I have been working on this project for a number of years and the committee is almost ready to launch. I need to focus on the fund first as a lot of people are working on this and families in our community are in need.

  63. Hello again, Jan. I visited ‘fallensparrows.ca’ (as everyone who reads this should). What an extraordinarily worthy ’cause’ you are sponsoring. Please count on me to help however I can (feel free to call me). There is no one more worthy of help than a child who is ill and, also, the parents who suffer (in their own way) for and with that child.

I hope you don’t mind if I get personal here (and divulge something you may not want to be public)…but I have never forgotten, a few years ago, when my own son was very very ill. I sat alone in his hospital room, scared out of my mind one awful night and , there, completely ‘out of the blue’ you and your husband (Les)appeared to support him and me. I hardly knew you, but Fatima (I think) told you of my son’s illness and there you were.Thank you.

For the record, Mayor Doug Craig come to the hospital to visit my son, a few days after you were there. I have never fogotten that either. I may disagree (most of the time) with Doug’s manner of handling city issues; but I never forget the day I went to the hospital; and there was my beloved son, fully conscious and raving about wanting to go home. He said, ‘Mom, Mr.Craig came to see me today.” I said, “Do you mean Mayor Craig?” Jason said,”Yeah, he’s the mayor now, but I still call him Mr. Craig.” (Because Jason had attended the same school where Doug was a teacher, he was accustomed to referring to him as ‘Mr.’) No matter what issues may arise (political or otherwise) I don’t believe anyone could ever forget the kindness paid to a child and their family, especially when a child is ill. I have never forgotten yours…or Doug’s.

  64. lt seems like a great cause. Good luck with it Jan. Ditto here for my child. There is no price too great for a recovery of a loved one. lf you want to orgaize a golf tournament call me. Margaret or Deb has my # l can help raise funds. l work on a course.
